POLLUTION CONTROL COMMISSION MEETING
Thursday, June 4, 1981
7:30 P.M.
4
Present: Richard Dalidowitz, Aian Wiersema, John Dennehy, and
John Stanton.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m., in Room 5 of the
Berlin Town Hall, Berlin, Connecticut, by Mr. Dalidowitz.
The Minutes of the May 5, 1981, meeting were accepte~ as read.
On June 4, 1981, the Pollution Control Commission wa'lked the
Deming Road Landfill with Wes Winterbottom from Departmen~t of Envi-
ronmental Protection. The consensus of the Commission was that it
was an industrial dump site and that little attention had been
paid in the past to what was dumped there. Concern was shown by
Mr. Stanton regarding what is now being dumped although tf~e Order
from the State of Connecticut only states that no hazardoias wastes
are to be dumped. Mr. Daiidowitz said that he would call New Britain
to see if waste is being accepted at the industrial portic~n of the
landfill. One of the questions to be asked was if the dur~oping was
being checked by a guard at the gate of the landfill.
Discussion followed regarding the levels which must k>e exceeded
before the DEP polices dumpsites. Basically this action is directed
towards large companies. One question posed was what about the
level of waste disposal by several small companies in a cc~ncentrated
area i.e., the Sportsmen's Well.
Christian Lane Site - Mr. Dalidowitz stated that he r•eceived
a clean bill of health from the State of Connecticut's Solid Waste
Management Department for Manafort's Christian Lane Landfill.
Stan Chem - Mr. Wiersema mentioned that all has been quiet re-
garding Stan Chem since the Commission's last meeting in Niay.
Silver Lake - Mr. ~alidowitz inentione~ a letter from
Dr. Chotkowski which recommends that all houses around Silver Lake
hook up to the new s~wer lines in order to avoid seepage into the
Lake and thereby keeping down the growth of algae.
Tufac - It was mentioned that this company has an extruder
which processes plastic and question what is involved in this pro-
cess.
Stan Chem - Discussion arose regarding a March 13, 1981, order
to Stan Chem frorn the Water Compliance and Hazardous Substances Di-
vision of Environmental Quality, Connecticut Department of Environ-
mental Protection. This order is in regard to waste water discharge
into the Mattabassett River. It defines what Stan Chem must do to
keep its permit for water quality (sampling, concentrated disposals,
al ternati ve pow~ r• sources i n theevent of power fai l ure) .
Having no tR~rther business, the Commission adjourned at 8:06 p.m.
Respectfully ~,ubmitted,
