MEETING MINUTES

PRESIDING: , The meeting was called to order at 7:40 PM by

DISPOSITION OF MINUTES OF JANUARY 5, 1982: Accepted as read.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Gail Craddock has tended her resignation as
Commission Secretary for health reasons, efEective
January 29, 1982.
OLD BUSINESS: Commission membership remains one permanent member
below chartered strength. To date, no coaanunication
has been received from Mayor Ward on this ma[ter.
NEW BUSINESS: Dr. Chotkowski provided the Commission with a copy
of the proposed decision of the Department oE
Environmental Protection concerning the Manafort
_ bulky waste disposal area located between Christian
Lane and Route 72. The decision cites numerous
violations of landfill regulations and recocmnends
that the permit for this site be suspended.
Concern was reiterated about the contamination of
public and private drinking wells. It was a~reed
that an ordinance to prevent contamination would be
difficult to enforce. Discussion [hen cent~red on
developing a set of safe practices for maintaining
wells and groundwater supplies. These guidelines
would be educational in purpose and instrucr_
residents in [he dangers of disposing of haxardous
chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, erc. into
a septic system or on proper[y near a privat:e well.

NEW BUSINESS (CONT.): It was suggested that A1 Wiersema also plot the
location of known private wells on his town map
to gauge their proximity to industrial user.s or
generators of hazardous waste.
Dr. Chotkowski suggested contacting the Wat:er
Resources branch of the State Department of~ Health
to learn if periodic sampling and analysis of
town drinking water supplies will continue. There
is concern that such useful services may be~ elimi-
nated as tight budgeting prevails at all 1EVels
. of government.
Having no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:40 PM.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 1982 at 7:30 PM
in Room 5 of the Berlin Town Hall.
