NEW BUSINESS: CHLORINATED SOLVENT IN ELTON ROAD WELLS:
On September 21,1982 the New Britain Herald
reported that the third well (t.est) at the
Elton Road site was contaminated with tri-
chloroethylene, an organic degreasing solvent.
This material is a suspected ca.rcinogen.
Despite continual pumping of this well since
early September, the concentrat.ion of this
solvent has remained at 35 to 55 parts per
billion which exceeds the maximum allowable
concentration of 25 parts per billion allowed
in drinking water. Aeration is being consi-
dered as a possible treatment method.
Discussion on the source of this contamination
and possible preventative actio~n followed.
DISCLOSURE & MONITORING OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
AND WASTE:
Regarding this topic, it was felt that the
Commission should be advised when new industry
is considering relocating into Berlin and, as
stipulated by the Charter, be given the
opportunity to provide input on the potential
pollution aspects to the Executive Board.
Having no further business, the~ meeting
adjourned at 9:30 PM. The next meeting will be
