11/15/1990TOWN OF BERLIN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES 240 KENSINGTON ROAD BERLIN, CT 06037 YOUTH SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING Thursday, November 15, 1990 7:00 p.m. Room #6, Town Hall UJ -n ) Members Present: Sue Buckley, Irene Hillstrand, Rex Smith, -Lida Huggins, Rich Peronace, Deb Staszewski Staff - Antoinette Pajor, Doug Truitt Members Excused: John Baccaro Members Absent: Lori Skinner 1) The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Lida Huggins. 2) The minutes from the previous meeting were amended to include Sue Buckley as excused. No citizens were present to address the board. 4) OLD BUSINESS a) Lida reported that while no formal evaluation of the awareness day has been completed Guy Parillo tells her that it was considered a success and they are planning another one for 1991. b) The Team Building camping trip was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts for some of the students and severe weather conditions. c) The Berlin Fair booth was a success with nearly all of the literature being distributed and UPBEAT Students providing staffing. d) The Youth Services Agency Fund was approved by the Board of Finance. e) Suggestion was made to amend the By-laws to hold the annual meeting in February rather than June. It was agreed that a proposed amendment will be sent to board members to vote on at the next meeting. , f) Discussed the possibilities of helping to organize and provide supportive services to the parents Of Freshmen. one suggestion was to use the existing freshman parents orientations as a vehicle for supplying information. sending one or more newsletters to the parents was also discussed. opinions differed as to whether this letter should provide a summary and update of school activities or information as to what programs, services, and supports are available from various agencies and organizations throughout the community. A motion was made and approved to further study the possibility of such a letter, what it's focus should be, and who should be responsible for sending ending such a letter. Lida and Rex will consult with UPBEAT Teams about this matter. g) -Recruitment of new board members was tabled until next meeting. 5) NEW BUSINESS TOWN OF BERLIN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES 240 KENSINGTON ROAD BERLIN, CT 06037 a) Doug reported that The United Way is seeking proposals for a grant that would be well suited to helping to fund an alternative detention program in one of the schools. Alice Mitchell responded favorably when consulted about possible UPBEAT participation in such a program. Applying for the grant now depends on a favorable response from the administration at McGee School. b) Contingent on Board of Education action funding is now in place to restore the open gym program at the High School. During the winter months there are very few.days when the gym is available. The question of the availability of the gym at McGee was raised. Motion was passed to look into the availability of the McGee gym or other gyms in town for open gym nights for High School Students. c) -NECFY membership was tabled until next meeting. 6) Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 6 at the Town Hall.
