COMMISSION OFFICE OF
FOR THE AGINGSeptember 16, 1985 THE DIRECTOR
The Commission for the Aging held their September 16, Z985
meeting at the Berlin Senior Center. Members attending were Mildred
Foster, Elsie Lunt, Charles Davis, Charles Graham, Norman Johnson,
Joseph Murphy and Florence Barrell.
Chairman Joseph Murphy called the meeting to order at 7: 10 P.M. .
Senior Citizen Director Mrs. Florence Barrell reported that the stage
wall would be painted and the Stage Curtain and Window Drapes would
be up before the Open House Dedication date which has been changed
and will take place on October 20, 1985. She suggested having Blanche
Mahon as one of the invited guests for the occasion and said that
Mildred Foster, Alice Fleming and Helen Murphy would be helping her
with planning the program.
A discussion regarding the lights along the Center walk was
held and was followed by Mrs. BArrell telling of the over-burdened
duties she performs and supervises daily with limited staff help
and volunteers. A meeting with the Executive and Finance Boards is
pending with reference to hiring full time additional qualified staff
for her and she asked the Commission members to try to attend.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10th the Mini-Bus broke down and Mrs. Barrell
said the repair cost would be approximately $2, 000. 00. It would be
out of commission for about a month. The cost of renting a bus is
$147. 00 per day. On Thursday, Sept. 12th, Mr. Van Gorder informed
Mrs. Barrell that he was quitting as the Senior Mini-bus driver; on
Friday, Sept. 13th she sent him a letter of acceptance of his verbal
resignation after a telephone poll of the available Commission members.
Mr. Davis suggested and most members of the Commission agreed
to ask the Executive Board to request from the Marjorie Moore fund
a grant to purchase a new 7 passenger Van as a back-up for the Mini-bus.
Mr. Graham reaffirmed his feeling there was merit to a lease/contract
arrangement where breakdowns would be covered by the contract holder.
The following recommendations suggested by Commission members
will be submitted by Mrs. Barrell to the Executive Board for the
period of bus breakdown and/or to cover future such occurances :
1) Limited Bus Service
2) Reduce bus service to 2 days per week
3) Investigate and possibly initiate a pay/ticket system
for bus use to offset costs
4) Request that the Executive Board approve it or the
Commission approach the Marjorie Moore Fund for a grant
to obtain a mini-van to serve while the mini-bus is being
repaired and as a back-up or supplement for future use.

5) The Commission feels we need to continue looking for
drivers -a matter first brought to Executive attention
on July 11, Z985, and followed up on August 18, Z985.

6) The Executive Board and/or its designated agent can
explore and look into private contractors providing
the service on a contractual basis.
The next meeting of the Commission for the Aging will be a
special one scheduled for Monday, September 30, Z985.
Mr. Johnson motioned and Mr. Graham seconded the meeting to
adjourn at 8: 20 P.M. , after which Mrs. Barrell left to attend an
Executive Board meeting at the Berlin Town Ha/Z.
Respectfully submitted,
