Office of the Selectme~
The meeti~ opened at 7:~30 P.M. with the three Selectmen present. Minutes of the
previous meeting were read and accepted.
Mrs. Mahan, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Covini of the press were present.
Mr. Graham reported that he had received a letter notifying the Board of
Selectmen that the Memorial Day Committee would meet on Mondays March 5, 1956 at
8:30 P.M. at the American Legion Home, at which time a chairman will be elected and
plans for the Memorial Day exercises formulated.
Mr. Graham read a letter directed to the Planning Commission with a copy to the
Board of Selectmen, from the Modern Radio Supply Co., Farmington Ave., Berlin, which
stated that they would like to PUrchase the three town owned pieces of property south
of their business.
Mr. Davis, Tow~'~ Engineer, met with the Selectmen ~his evening and made it known
that Mr. E. Ernest Cartier, Jr. number two man with the engineering department wished
to resign.
Mr. Davis said that the department was in need of a man who was an experienced
field man and r~commanded the name of Mr. Raymond Wojculiewicz to fill the v~cancy.
Mr. Detmn asked why the Board of Selectmen has not heard about Mr. Carrier's
inefficiencies before this, to which Mr. Davis replied that no one ~has asked him
specifically. Mr. Davis further said that Mr. Cartier was inexperienced.
Mr. Deban said that he felt that Mr. Cartier was entitled to a hearing in order
to obtain the other side of the story, to which Mr. Graham said that he felt td~is was

Mr. Graham pointed out that Mr. Cartier was h~red on a six months trial b~sis.
Mr. Graham moved, Mr. Cistare seconded, that Mr. Cartier be given a months notice
on the recommendation of the Town Engineer, and also that he be given the opportunity
to resign.

Bids for furnishing the Town of Berlin with six 10;OOX20 12 ply truck tires and
three tubes as per specifications, were opened this evening as follows:

Mr. Dehan suggested that the First Selectman and Grant Skinner, Highway Supt. look

Motion unanimously carried.
Mr. Dehau said that he had received a ca~l from Mr. Baccarro and found that he
heard nott~ing from the T~,xL Engineer as was agreed upon.
Mr. Davis reported that he contacted theTown Health Officer and passed along to him
the facts as discussed, and to date has not had a reply from the doctor. Mr. Davis said
that he did not call Mr. Baccarro because he had nothing to report.
It was agreed that the First Selectman write the ~ Health ~ asking what Mr.
Baccarro must do to make his lot conform.
Mr. Graham to report back.
Mr. Graham read a letter dated Feb. 27, 1956 from the New Britain Field Trial Club.
Inc. Dorothy Lombra, Sec. requesting permission to u~e Webster Park to run a dog, bird
field trial on Sunday March ll, 1956.
Mr. Gr~mn moved, Mr. Dehan seconded, that the request of the New Britain Field Trial
Club Inc. be granted, stipulating that ~he State laws be foll~ed and that the Secretary
be made responsible for the condition of the property.
Notion unanimously carried.
Mr. Graham reported that the garbage collection was started today as scheduled and
made out quite satisfactorily.
Mr. Graham informed the selectmen that a Mr. Frank Bunk was hired to replace ~
~ as he did not report for work~
Mr. Graham explained that a liquid sump tank w~s required, and moved that the truck
be delivered to E.L. Bee~:wor~h Inc. when convenient that this liquid sump can be installed
at a price of $68.00.
Mr. Cistare seconded.
Motion unanimously carried.
Mr. Graham moved, Mr. Cistare seconded that rain gear be purchased for the garbage
collectors.
Motion unanimously carried.
Mr. Graham reported that he had ordered the purchase of 300' of garden hose to be
used for the washing of the truck.
Mr. Graham further moved, Mr. Cistare seconded, anthorizing the First Selectman
to purchase coveralls for the garbage collectors, when it was de~ermined that they were
permanent.
Motion unanimously carried.
Mr. Graham moved, Mr. Cistare seconded, that the la~ firm of Erickson, Politis,
and Gleaeon be retained for the remainder of the elected term in ~£fice as Town Counsel.
Mr. Dehan - opposed on the basis that one man cannot serve two masters.
Motion carried.
Mr. Graham said that in speaking with Attorney Politis that he would suggest that
Mr. Ericson, Corporation Counsel for the City of Ne~ Britain, withdraw as counsel
where New Britain was legally involved with Berlin.
Mr. Graham read a letter from Attorney John B. Grant of New Haven, representing
International Business Machine Co. regarding assessment reduction on machines owned
by this company.
Selectmen concurred that this letter be for*arded to the Town Counsel.
Mr. Graham informed the Selectmen that he had received word from Gov. A.AoRibicoff,
that there would be a conference Thursday, March 8th at 8:30 P.M. for the purpose of
discussing fire prevention. Local F~re marshslls are asked to attend this conference.

The Selectmen met jointly with the Industrial Development Committee this wvening.
