1977-02-15 Minutes of the Meeting of The Conservation Commission held February 15,
1977 at 7:30 P. M. in the Town Hall.
Members present:
Diane Legouri, Dr. Ringrose, Joe Paskiewicz, and Al Bengston,
Mr. Siah L. St.Clair, Jr., Park Naturalist from the Town of
Wethersfield, was also present as our guest.
Mr. St.Clair has been the Park Naturalist in the Town of Wethersfield
since April of 1973 and in that capacity has been the coordinator of
the park and recreational program in that town and particularly in
connection with the Nature Center program, its goals and activities
that have been developed within the Wintergreen Woods park land area
in which the Nature Center is situated. He has developed several
program goals which included the following interpretive programs:
1. The Administration of the Nature Center and the development of
nature programs for community participation.
2. To organize, plan, and to supervise field work activity, nature
trails and walks.
3. To provide nature center displays that would be open to the public.
4. To plan and conduct public nature programs for all ages and groups.
5. To coordinate private group program activities and plan school
program nature walks, exhibits, slides and movies.
In summary, Mr. St. Clair is a professor and interpretive naturalist
who has the responsibility of coordinating the overall nature and
conservation program for the people and the Town of Wethersfield. It
was an extremely interesting and informative discussion for our
Commission.
The following items of business were reviewed by the Commission:
1. The status of the Federal and State grants re The Bicentennial Park
application and the Stawski grant re The Ragged Mountain Memorial Park
application.
2. Bills received from A. R. Canzonetti for updating appraisals for
the Bicentennial Park application totaling $1,725.00 to be paid from
the Town's Open Space Account.
3. The chairman was authorized to reply to Mayor Powers' letter of
December 23rd re Donald Munson's request to continue to use the corn
field in The Bicentennial Park area.
tir 4. In regard to Mayor Powers' letter to Mr. Henry Sage requesting his
approval to sell an isolated portion of the park near Mt. Lamentation
near the Meriden town line, the Commission was of the opinion that if
the land was sold, the proceeds should be used to buy additional land
adjoining the park area.
