2015-11-19 TOWN OF BERLIN Park and Recreation Commission 230 Kensington Road • Berlin, CT 06037 Thursday, November 19, 2015 7:00 p.m. Berlin Community Center Special Meeting Minutes ATTENDANCE : Present: Commissioners : Len Zielinski-Chairman Steve Hinchliffe Robert Sylvester , Fred Jortner, Jr Staff: Jim Capodiece – Director Community, Recreation and Park Services Debbie Dennis - Superintendent of Recreation Art Volz - Superintendent of Public Grounds Jon Zuk – Golf Course Director Absent: Commissioner Charles Warner, Donna Bovee, Don Dellaquila . AUDIENCE OF CITIZENS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Sylvester made a motion to approve the minutes as amended from October 8, 2015 seconded by Commissioner Hinchliffe, The motion was approved unanimously. CONSENT AGENDA a. Kensington Nursery School donation request for Preschool program pass for their th December 5 raffle Motion made by Commissioner Hinchliffe to approve donation with a max of $65.00, seconded by Commissioner Jortner. The motion was approved unanimously. PUBLICGROUNDS a. Monthly Report  Pruning at Percival playground and at High school retention pond area  3 dead trees removed from Hubbard School  Dead pine trees cut down in front of Sage Park  Dead tree removed from Worthington Meeting House  New rubber surface has been completed at Friendship Place.  New plastic installed on the greenhouse  New net installed at the Percival soccer field  New sign built for Volunteer Park and the upper part of sign all repainted  Grinding (52) stumps at various locations: Sage, Town Hall, Senior Center. McGee and Clark’s Grove. b. Baseball dirt update No update as of yet, Tabled until next meeting or until group comes back c. Leak in East Berlin Pool - Unsure of cost. Management is aware of situation. There is a proposal in house for $16,500 for section of pool to be repaired. Not in budget can be more PARKS AND RECREATION a. Monthly Report  Winter basketball registration went well 307 signed up to make 31 teams. There still is opening for girls 7-9 yr. olds. Software used for 50% of the registrations.  99% of the programs will now be online th  7 Annual Tree Lighting will be held on 11-28 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm with a holiday toy and food drive, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, fire trucks, caroling and hot cocoa provided by the Kiwanis Club  Santa’s parlor will be held on November 30 and December 1  Tinsel Run – 2 Mile course will be held December 5, starting at Berlin High School  Also be hosting the North Pole Connection b. Discussion - Senior Center interaction – moving forward with the old Knight of Columbus location for the new senior housing. Also looking for another location since this will leave them at least 50-100 beds short. TIMBERLIN GOLF COURSE a. Monthly Report – see hand out  Continuing fairway and tee aerification process  Tree pruning  Preparing irrigation system and pump house for winterization. The winterization of system will take place on November 16 b. Golf Range update see hand out – Denise McNair, Len Zielinski, Jerry Salvio, Bill Pajor and Jon Zuk met with Timberlin Men’s and Senior Men’s club, Ladies club, and Senior ladies club on Monday, November 2, 2015 to discuss the driving range. The meeting took place at Par Fore the Course at Timberlin. Wanted to know what the boundaries that the ordinance call out c. Golf Pro monthly report – see hand out d Discussion – Last discussion with Council re donations – The council wanted a cap and or budget put on how much Timberlin is giving away in donations e Revenue update – Down by approximately $15,598 hoping to gain some of that back with the great weather we have been having.
