2013-02-12 TOWN OF BERLIN CONSERVATION COMMISSION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2013 ROOM 8 - BERLIN TOWN HALL - 6:30 P.M. APPROVED Members Present: Michael DeLorenzo, Chairman Guy Hoffman, Vice-Chairman Karl G. Lewis Joseph Mazza Robert Ramsey Karen Pagliaro Members Absent: Steven Sokolowski Patricia T. Bigelow Staff: Sheel Patel, Secretary Guests: Kristopher Lotko Thomas Heisler, Berlin Land Trust 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chairman DeLorenzo called the meeting to order @ 6:30 P.M. The commissioners expressed sadness and shock over the passing of fellow commissioner, Jim Matulis and that the commission expresses condolences to the Matulis family. Jim was a valuable member of the Conservation Commission for many years and his contributions, positive attitude and sense of humor will greatly missed. 2. ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Commissioner Lewis motioned to re- elect Chairman DeLorenzo for the next term. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Pagliaro and unanimously approved. Commissioner Lewis motioned to re-elect Vice Chairman Hoffman for the next term. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ramsey and unanimously approved. 3. AUDIENCE OF CITIZENS: Kristopher Lotko, Berlin resident, was present at the meeting. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – Tuesday, January 8, 2013: Commissioner Pagliaro made a motion to accept the Minutes of January 8, 2013 as written. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Lewis & unanimously approved. Conservation Commission Meeting Minutes – 2/12/2013 - Page 2 5. NEW BUSINESS: Silver Lake: An interest has been issued for the land parcel. Bicentennial Park parking time constraint: The commission addressed concerns of the neighbors in the area of the park. Chairman DeLorenzo stated he would check on the proposal for the parking lot. Commission Brochures: Chairman DeLorenzo reported that ordering 1000 brochures would cost about $204 and an additional $104 for 800 #10 envelopes. The plan is to send out about 800 of the brochures to people around town. The commission would also like to update them every few years and distribute them to new property owners in town. Vice Chairman Hoffman motioned to accept this plan. Commissioner Lewis seconded and the motion was unanimously approved. 6. OLD BUSINESS: A. Use of Town Lands: Hatchery Brook Community Garden – Commissioner Lewis stated that he has some reservations about putting the sign on the fence, to which Vice Chairman Hoffman agreed. Several members stated that the sign should include the commission’s logo. Mr. Lotko suggested that a symbol to represent the hiking trails and community garden be added to each sign. The commission agreed that they want to keep the new sign the same size as the ones it will be around so that it does not appear overwhelming. They also agreed that the wording on the sign be condensed to just “Community Gardens and Hiking Trails”. B.OPEN SPACE ACQUISITION – C.OPEN SPACE PUBLICATION – KAREN L.
