Chairman Leonard Zielinski, Commissio py.~er.Jel~-Solek, Chuck Warner, Pro at Timberlin Golf Course, Jeff Coder~r~e, ~ uperintendent for Timberlin Golf Course, Jonathan Zuk and Director of Parks & Recreation, Steve Kelly. ABSENT: Commissioners Rick DeGroff, Don Dellaquilla and Rob Sylvester AUDIENCE OF CITIZENS: I3en Levesque, from Troop 50 of the Boy Scouts came before the Commission to discuss leis Eagle Scout Project. It is the construction of a covered picnic gazebo at Timberlin Park, adjacent to the swing sets. Mr. Levesque discussed the benefits of the project, which included shelter from the sun and inclement weather. Pvlr. Levesque stated that the gazebo would be l Ox 10 in size, on a gravel stone base with :; tab roof shingles. Pressure treated wood be used. The gazebo would be anchored and handicap accessible. Mr. Levesque has met with Public Works, Building Department and the Town Development Services. Mr. Levesque has a list of volunteers for the project which would be completed by June 8, 2008. Commissioner Warner moved to approve the project, seconded by Commissioner Solek. 'Che motion carried unanimously. 1VIurray Heights Residents John Frink and Marge Roberts from the Fairwood Drive Association came before the Commission to discuss improvements for the park at Murray Heights. 1vlr. Frink stated that the park was built in 1942 and has changed over the years. Mr. 1?rink stated that new equipment is needed in particular, picnic tables. The park gets all of the hand me downs from the other facilities in Town. Mr. Frink stated that the Association would like to sponsor functions in the park. He also stated that the children <~re not interested in the park because it is not inviting and suggested trails in the park to make it more inviting. Chairman Zielinski mentioned that the budget has already been set making any major changes in the immediate future difficult. Commissioner Bovee suggested help from the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Mr. Kelly will contact Public Grounds regarding the project. CONSENT AGENDA: Approve one free summer playground registration to be used as a raffle prize for the ilpBeat auction to be held on May 29, 2008. Added to the consent agenda with the approval of the Commission: Request from CTFC Elite Soccer to sell food at their event and for Hadfields to sell rnerchandise. lvletro Swim Shop would like to sell swimsuits this summer and have the vendor fee ~Naived. Commissioner Bovee moved to approve the consent agenda, seconded by Commissioner `JVarner. The motion carried unanimously. 'CIMBERLIN GOLF COURSE: ]Pavilion Status lvlr. Zuk stated that bids were opened on May 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Four bids were :submitted for the raised base with cart storage beneath, ranging from $238K-300K. Slab bids ranged from $37K-100K. "the ADA ramp ranged from $20K-100K, dependent on the location. Senior cart rate and senior tournament issue feedback The Town Council agreed with Parks & Rec not to fraction the rates for seniors and to abide by the current policy, charging weekend rates for holidays that fall on Mondays. Accordingly the restricted senior season pass could not be used on those mornings for the :>enior tournaments. Chairman Zielinski discussed further expanding Timberlin policies regarding proof of residency. 'Che consensus of the Commission was for a resident to provide: ]Zeal estate tax records in the applicant's spouse's child's or parent's name or rental i•eceipt/contract and cancelled rent payment checks and utility credit card bill postmarked ~Nithin the past 90 days. Zuk stated that the golf course is looking to rent extra carts from June to October. "This was done last year and proved to be economical and effective. ]PUBLIC GROUNDS: ]Monthly Report "The report was discussed and reviewed. "The Sage Park maintenance building roof and Zippadelli Field infield light relamping ]nave been completed. 'The Town Council approved the funding to replace the backstop at Pulcini Field. ]Mr. Kelly informed the Commissioners about the cutbacks in the Public Grounds ]Department. :PARKS & RECREATION: ~Mr. Kelly stated that several camps would be run this summer. :Mr. Kelly approved the field usage for the New England Knights football club for this :fall. Mr. Kelly checked neighboring towns regarding pool admission guidelines: ~• Wethersfield -children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. ~• Rocky Hill -children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult. ~~ Newington -children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Mr. Kelly is recommending that Berlin adopt the criteria that children under the age of 11 ~be accompanied by an adult. Commissioner Bovee moved to approve the :recommendation, seconded by Commissioner Solek. The motion carried unanimously. 'The Berlin Fire Department would like to hold a parade ending at Sage on August 23, 2008 to celebrate their 65`f' anniversary. The time has been blocked out. "This year the Dare Magnetic Mini Car Show will not be held this year. 'The American Cancer Society is holding their relay for life at BHS track on Saturday, :May 17`h at 12 noon until Sunday, May 18`h at 12 noon. This event is a fundraiser for the .American Cancer Society. :Mr. Kelly informed the Commissioners about the cutbacks in the Recreation Department. 'The pools will open when once schools are out. Percival Pool will remain open until .August 24`h. Approximately 3 or 4 days would be dropped from the Playground program schedule due to the number of staff leaving early to return to school.
